Dervla Kirwan, Gregory Fitoussi and a glamorous Riviera setting add interest, but the cliché-ridden plot strains patience and credulity. Ioan Gruffudd plays an author unable to resist the lure of the past in this overwrought six-part crime thriller (already available on ITVX) about a group of former friends drawn back to the scene of a crime years later. And you may find his explanation as to what he’s been up to lately (cough: a certain major conflict in Eastern Europe) a bit hard to swallow. ![]() Even then, he seems to be recast in the unlikely guise of saviour of the human race (or, same thing, American democracy). Unfortunately we must wade through 50 minutes of fairly tedious slush in this opening episode – regarding Prince’s preparations for a run at the US presidency and Chuck Rhoades’s (Paul Giamatti) convoluted stratagems to get himself off the judicial hook – before Axe eventually makes his re-appearance. New protagonist Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) just didn’t have the same gravitational pull – so Axe’s return for this final series is hugely welcome. Axe was the magnetic force at the centre of a series that seemed to wheel around blindly without him following his departure in season five (following the death of Lewis’s wife Helen McCrory). The good news for fans of the high-rolling capitalist thrill-ride that is Billions, is that Damian Lewis is returning as money-making genius Bobby Axelrod. ![]()
